Dawson Creek, BC

June 1, and we are at Dawson Creek, British Columbia.  Let me think of an excuse for staying here three days .  .  .  wait a minute, I don't need an excuse .  .  .  our schedule is written in jello, so we can do whatever we want as long as we want--just so we are back in Grants Pass before October.  (P. says, NO---Before Sept.!! There is a lot to see here.  This, as you may know, is where the Alaskan Highway was started in 1942.  Quite amazingly they built a road in 11 months!  Of course it was rebuilt the next year; in 1946 US gave it to the Canadians--who didn't want it--, and it is rebuilt over again almost every year.  Now it has quite a bit of traffic.  From some of the photos and videos we have seen, the original road building was no picnic.  We can't show all that for you, so you will have to come up and see it for yourself.  But we can show you these:
Place to start:  Dawson Creek Visitor Center
The Center displayed alot of interesting critters of Alaska---very well done--here's a sampling:

Wondering just how many of these we will actually get to see!

Nose to nose

As explained above, these Elk Antlers are several thousand years old!  Land of amazement.
Pauline wants to try out an old fashion kitchen
Model of bridge building, first year and second

From here we wandered around the Pioneer Village, which is right next to the Mile Zero CG where we were camped.
Main (& the only) Street

Pauline and 40 foot long Birch burl log.

1928 Ford at Village

Telephone Switchboard--used until the 1950's
There was more to see but you get the idea.
Besides some one is getting tired--(also the 'other someone')

Here we are at the Alaska Highway start so tomorrow "Off we go .  .  ."
This is Mile "O" --and how far is it to Delta Junction, AK, the end of the Alaskan Hwy??
